During his time with NU, Jacob has made huge progress in a short space of time.
“Looking back, I realise how green I was when I started,” Jacob said. “The amount I’ve learned in a short space of time has been massive. When I think about the things I used to overthink, I now just do them without a second thought.”
Working closely with Commercial Director Matthew Crowther, Jacob has developed a strong understanding of the QS role and a meticulous eye for detail — a skill he says will stay with him throughout his career.
“Matthew’s attention to detail is unbelievable, and I think that’s rubbed off on me. That’s probably the biggest thing I’ll take forward, focusing on the small details, because that’s what makes a difference in the end.”
Jacob has been involved in several projects across the business, including Firth Point, WJ North, and West End Golf Club, where he took on the lead surveyor role himself.
“That one stands out for me. It was the first job I ran on my own, and it gave me a real sense of responsibility. I learned a lot from it.”
Now, Jacob is heading to Australia to continue playing semi-professional rugby while pursuing his career as a QS.
“It just felt like the right time to try something new. My dad’s Australian, rugby is huge over there, and it’s a chance to experience a different lifestyle while continuing my career.”
When asked what he’ll miss most about NU, Jacob didn’t hesitate:
“The people. Everyone’s been patient and supportive while I’ve learned. Nobody’s ever made me feel silly for asking questions. I’ve learned a lot from everyone, even just by listening to conversations around me. NU gave me my first real chance in the industry, and I can’t speak highly enough of the company.”
While we are sad to see Jacob go, we’re incredibly proud of everything he’s achieved in his time here and we’ll be cheering him on from afar as he takes on this exciting new chapter.
Good luck, Jacob — from everyone at NU Construction.
