NU Construction was awarded the contracts for three separate tenders at Parkside School following a competitive tendering process.
The scope of works included the complete strip-out and refurbishment of the library, the strip-out and renovation of three separate toilet blocks (for Sixth Form students and staff), and roof repairs. The roof works involved the replacement of 10 rooflights, upstands, flashings, and associated internal finishes in the communal areas.
Library Refurbishment
The library refurbishment involved the removal of existing ceiling tiles, floor finishes, and the reception desk. The curved library wall was replaced with a new metal stud wall, creating a straight line to accommodate a full-length feature teaching wall complete with PC workstations and integrated storage. Additionally, a modern reception desk was installed, equipped with integrated power and IT points.
The works also included the installation of new ceiling tiles, acoustic baffles, and upgraded lighting. The library received a full redecoration and new floor coverings to create a modern, functional, and inviting learning environment.
WC Refurbishment
The scope of works involved the complete strip-out and refurbishment of the Sixth Form toilets, as well as the male and female staff toilets located in different areas of the school. Each space was stripped back to the shell to facilitate a full refit, including the installation of a new ventilation system across all areas.
The refurbishment works included:
This comprehensive refurbishment ensured modern, hygienic, and functional facilities for both staff and students
Rooflight Replacement and Associated Works
The project involved replacing the existing deteriorated rooflights with new rooflights and automatic opening lights, complete with new upstands and flashings. Additional works included the replacement of localised sections of the roof ridge and corrosion remedial works.
The rooflights were distributed across the entire two-storey school building, which lacked edge protection. As a result, the access strategy was critical to the success of the project. Access stairs and loading bays with edge protection were installed, linking the roofs to all 10 rooflights. For safety, internal crash decks were constructed within the first-floor corridors to protect the areas below the works.
Given the tight programme and lead times for materials, the new rooflights could not be delivered until the final week of the contract. To ensure progress, all new upstands and kerbs were installed, and flashings were completed with temporary weatherproofing until the rooflights arrived.
During the final week, the rooflights were installed using a crane. Scaffold removal commenced just days before the school term resumed, leaving insufficient time to complete the internal finishes. These works, including connecting the automatic opening lights, were instead carried out during the October half-term to avoid disruption to the school’s day-to-day operations.
The successful completion of this project was achieved through the careful planning and coordination of the NU project team, supported by a reliable supply chain of contractors who were able to respond effectively to the demanding programme
It is an enormous credit to your team the building was ready and that the work had been completed to such a high standard.
